Back in Bar Harbor for another peek, a handsome small place that is about to see the end of the sometimes overwhelming tourist season.
That doesn’t include us, of course.
It was wet and cold today, but we worked up some heat on a hike in beautiful Acadia National Park.
The light rain made the fall foliage glow. And coming after an extended dry period, parts of the forest were teeming with mushrooms.
One of the prettiest: Amantia Muscaria, an orange-yellow puff the size of a golf ball. It seemed ready to eat, sprinkled with white crystals that could be salt or sugar.
We did not conduct a taste test, though.
The mushroom, also known as Fly Agaric, is poisonous. Indigenous peoples and foragers claim that handled properly, it is instead a magic mushroom: a powerful intoxicant and hallucinogenic.
I took its portrait and moved along.
