Bar Harbor, Maine, USA:
Mountain, Ocean, Desert, and Dessert

By Corey Sandler

Bar Harbor is one of the prettiest places in one of the prettiest regions of the world and this is (usually) the prettiest time of year to visit.

Fall in New England is an extraordinary experience, and we are hoping for brilliant foliage, clear skies, and a relative reduction in the number of tourists who come to Bar Harbor to see all of the above.

The town of Bar Harbor has lured artists and vacationers since the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, and some of the gilded visitors helped fund the acquisition of land that led to the marvelous Acadia National Park.

In the heart of summer, Bar Harbor can be a very busy place. In late September cruise ships going “up” to Boston (I know it is to the south, but to old salts that meant sailing upwind) or down east to Canada (downwind, but I’m sure you figured that out) bring a a few thousand at a time for a day’s visit.

Last Call

By Corey Sandler

It’s last call in Bar Harbor, a beautiful place for most of the year. It is in a way especially beautiful in the time of year some locals call “almost winter.

The skies were gray and filled with fog and when we went to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak along the coastline of the Eastern United States, we were nearly blown over by the wind.

But the colors in the trees against the flat gray light were ethereal.

Here is some of what I saw today:

You can read more about Bar Harbor in my earlier postings from this year and before.

Here are some photos from sunnier days:

Back to the Bar

By Corey Sandler

We are once again in Bar Harbor, Maine and the autumn colors are in full Glory.

Most of the tourists who filled the streets of the small town in summer are gone to warmer places. But three cruise ships–among the last for the year–lie at anchor offshore.

We went for a hike on the Shore Path which leads from town through the backyards of some of the grand cottages of the Gilded Age.

Here is some of what we saw:

Approaching the Bar

By Corey Sandler

Back in Bar Harbor for another peek, a handsome small place that is about to see the end of the sometimes overwhelming tourist season.

That doesn’t include us, of course.

It was wet and cold today, but we worked up some heat on a hike in beautiful Acadia National Park.

The light rain made the fall foliage glow. And coming after an extended dry period, parts of the forest were teeming with mushrooms.

One of the prettiest: Amantia Muscaria, an orange-yellow puff the size of a golf ball. It seemed ready to eat, sprinkled with white crystals that could be salt or sugar.

We did not conduct a taste test, though.

The mushroom, also known as Fly Agaric, is poisonous. Indigenous peoples and foragers claim that handled properly, it is instead a magic mushroom: a powerful intoxicant and hallucinogenic.

I took its portrait and moved along.

When Fall Comes to New England

By Corey Sandler

Bar Harbor is a lovely, small place on the coast of the mostly empty state of Maine in the northeast corner of the United States.

When climate, weather, and the calendar coincide properly it is one of the best places to experience the beauty of fall in New England: trees filled with leaves in stunning hues of orange, yellow, red, and purple. The change of colors starts further north, across the border in Canada, and makes its way down the coast.

It is also the tail end of hurricane season and deep into nor’easter storm season. The trick is to arrive after the colors have changed and before the inevitable big storm comes along to wipe it all away.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK TODAY

I went today with a group of guests on a hike on the OCean Trail within Acadia National Park. It was a cool damp morning, appropriate for Fall in New England.

Here is some of what we saw today.

BAR HARBOR

The town of Bar Harbor is quite small, with a permanent population of about 5,000.

Of course, that population swells greatly in the summer and fall.

At the back of the harbor is the bar, a stretch of sand and gravel that is covered at high tide but visible and often walkable at low tide across to Bar Island.

Mount Desert Island is Maine’s largest island, with an area of 108 square miles (280 km²).

That makes it the sixth largest island in the continental United States, and the second largest on the east coast of the United States—behind Long Island in New York and ahead of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.

Even without the park, it’s a pretty place, especially if you go past the t-shirt shops and into the old town.

Seasons Come and Seasons Go

By Corey Sandler, Destination Consultant Silversea Cruises

Winter is coming to the Maritimes and the New England coast. Yes, it’s just October 26, but the winds have become a bit stiffer and their direction has changed to come from the north.

In Bar Harbor today, some of the shops were preparing to close for the year after our ship departs tonight. It’s a great time to buy a lumberjack’s coat, although they do seem to grow them rather larger around here: I tried on a Triple-X jacket which fit me like a bearskin.

The talk around town was of the first seasonal accident: a rural Mainer was rushed to the hospital after getting his fingers between the piston and the mechanism of a log splitter. He seemed to be all right, although quite concerned about how he would continue his stockpiling of wood for the winter.

The day dawned clear and cool, about 42 degrees. By afternoon, it was gray and windy.

By tomorrow, Bar harbor will be mostly empty of those of us who are not from around hey-ah.

Bar Harbor Without Acadia

By Corey Sandler, Destination Consultant Silversea Cruises

A non-partisan quip, from one of my literary heroes, Mark Twain: “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.”

The history of Bar Harbor, Maine is bound up in the glorious greensward now known as Acadia National Park.

It’s a great place to visit, especially if you are lucky enough to be there in good weather with the fall colors in full display.

Well, we had the weather and we had the colors, but we did not have the park.

Because of the shutdown of the federal government (See Mark Twain, above), the park was closed.

There were three cruise ships in the harbor: two small vessels including Silver Whisper and one ugly megaship.

The streets were jammed. The ice cream and taffy stands busy. And the park closed.

The Park-less Town

The town of Bar Harbor is quite small, with a permanent population of about 5,000.

Of course, that population swells greatly in the summer and fall.

At the back of the harbor is the bar, a stretch of sand and gravel that is covered at high tide but visible and often walkable at low tide across to Bar Island.

It can cause a bit of inconvenience if you’ve gone out on the bar and the tide comes in behind you to cover your escape route.

We come back to Bar Harbor on Silver Whisper in about three weeks. We hope the park is open, Congress is shut, and the leaves still red and gold.
